Matthew D. Yoder

Oregon Mennonite school teacher convicted of abusing student, school sued for negligence

In 2014, Matthew David Yoder (b. 1982) pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree sex abuse of a 15-year-old female student and was sentenced to 32 months in prison. The victim filed a lawsuit in 2015 seeking $5.5 million in damages from Western Mennonite School in Salem, Oregon, and Pacific Northwest Mennonite Conference. The civil complaint asserted that the school administration hired Yoder despite knowing about previous allegations, and that they continued to employ him amid concerns about his behavior with female students. The lawsuit was settled out of court.
