Anthony R. Okuley

Bluffton University professor convicted of sex crimes after filming former students

In 2007, Anthony “Tony” Okuley (b. 1967) pleaded no contest to pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, a fourth-degree felony. Okuley was an assistant professor of business at Bluffton University, in Bluffton, Ohio, and an instructor of accounting at Ohio Northern University, in Ada, Ohio. In 2005, according to The Lima News (Lima, Ohio), a former student who was house sitting for Okuley discovered secretly-recorded videotapes of himself and at least one other man. When police investigated, they found 18 videos of the two men undressing or using Okuley’s bathroom, along with almost 100 other homemade and pornographic videos.

Law enforcement initially charged Okuley related to the hidden camera, a misdemeanor, but those charges were dropped after investigators found hundreds of pictures of child pornography in various locations on several computer hard drives. Okuley was charged with four felonies related to the child pornography and agreed to a plea deal. The court sentenced Okuley to 30 days in jail, four years probation, and 100 hours of community service.

From 1986 to 2005, Okuley worked in various roles at Bluffton University, where he was an assistant professor of business when he resigned in 2005. Ohio Northern University hired Okuley in 2002 as a part-time accounting instructor, and he was scheduled to begin a full-time teaching position as the school. According to The Lima News, Ohio Northern University asked Okuley to resign when they learned about the criminal charges.

At his sentencing hearing, Okuley reportedly blamed others for the child pornography police found on his computer, implying that someone else had put the files there. “I can guarantee you nothing similar to this will ever take place again,” he said. Okuley’s attorney told the court that Okuley had resigned from his teaching roles and was working for a car dealership.

Two years later, court records and news accounts show, Okuley was convicted of multiple counts of grand theft and ordered to pay $33,176 in restitution to a local car dealership.
